Oahu's picturesque public tribute and remembrance ceremony, Lantern Floating Hawaii
, is booked for Memorial Day, May 28.
Each year residents and visitors alike flock to Ala Moana Beach Park at sunset to float lanterns from the beach into the water. Each of the roughly 7,000 lanterns carries a personal message or homage to a deceased loved one, request for peace, or similar missive.
This year's theme for the annual event is "Many Rivers, One Ocean -- Resonance," and is meant to represent the ceremony's bridging of multiple backgrounds and cultures, and collective message of peace. Lantern Floating Hawaii is presented by the nonprofit Na Lei Aloha Foundation. The event is free and open to the public.
