Built in 1568 as a private residence, Villa d'Este has been a hotel since the 1800s. It resides on a dreamy lakeside plot on the northern edge of Cernobbio, within earshot of the Il Redentore, a few minutes farther (but a world away) from the stylish Sheraton.
Guests here are about 45-minutes' drive from Milan's Malpensa Airport although it is common for the biggest spenders to arrive by helicopter. On the opposite end of the price scale, it is possible to drag your luggage from the ferry stop that's within walking distance.
