Location and History
Standing proud at the tip of Charleston, overlooking the waterfront, 20 South Battery occupies a historic 1843 house that was once home to Colonel Richard Lathers, who renovated the property to add a ballroom and many of the architectural details that exist today. Lathers, intent on unifying the North and the South after the Civil War, saw the ballroom and other common areas as a place to hold events that could help bring together a divided nation.
A later owner, the Pringle family, started what is now known as the Charleston Preservation Society, and they were the first to turn part of the property into an inn.
