on the Cuyabeno River, Cuyabeno Reserve, Ecuador
Location and History
Located in a prime position along the Rio Cuyabeno, a seasonally flooded rainforest river deep in the Cuyabeno Reserve, a 6,034 sq km tropical rainforest preserve that is home to pink river dolphins, manatees, caiman, anacondas, several species of monkeys and a variety of bird species, including parrots and hoatzin, affectionately known as stinky turkeys.
This rich, biologically diverse habitat is precariously protected. Oil companies would love to see the protected status removed.
