Nakahakusancho, Fuyacho Anekoji-agaru,, Kyoto, Japan 604-8094
Description
Serene Traditional 2-story Ryokan established in 1818 & owned by the same family for 6 generations.
Location and History
This hostelry is widely acknowledged as one of the best traditional ryokan in Japan, a claim shared with the Tawaraya directly across the narrow street. Its name derives from the Japanese word for holly, which is said to bring good fortune.
Dating from 1818, this low-key inn has hosted countless international notables, yet the only evidence of grandeur is the occasional limousine sidling up in front. Nobel Prize-winning Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata called Hiiragiya his home away from home, and this has eventually lured the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplin (although it is now equipped for today's traveler).
