149, Cerro Alegre, Valparaiso, Chile 2340000
Description
Former palace-turned-boutique-hotel; facade painted a bright salmon stucco in keeping with the rest of the colorful neighborhood.
Location and History
Built in 1923 by a wealthy Croatian immigrant, this beautiful mansion was said to be a gift from the owner to his British wife. The couple lived in the huge home for 10 years before moving to the U.K.
The property was left unused for several decades while being overseen by the city government. Finally in 2009, a Chilean and Swiss family bought it, converted it into a boutique hotel, and opened Palacio Astoreca in 2012. The owners now live in France, but visit frequently.
