The Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort & Spa in Tulum-Akumal is the location of Dolphin Discovery’s latest marine attraction.
The dolphinarium, which opened in June, is a saltwater lagoon home to four Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, named Charly, Athos, Gigio and Porthos.
Visitors can get an up-close perspective of the dolphins while floating in the lagoon, standing on an underwater platform or on the observation deck encircling the lagoon.
“We’re happy about the collaboration with the world’s leading company of dolphinariums. Swimming with dolphins is an unforgettable experience and represents a bonus to our hotel guests,” said Don Abel Matutes, president of Sirenis Hotels & Resorts.
The new Dolphin Discovery is a member of the Alliance of Marine Mammals Parks and Aquariums and adheres to the organization’s standards of training and care of marine mammals.
Three programs are offered at the new site.
• Dolphin Encounter: All family members can get involved; kids as young as 1 can interact with dolphins, and participants learn about dolphins' diet and behavior. $89 for ages 6 and up.
• Swim Adventure: Includes belly rides when participant holds onto dolphin's flippers as it swims backwards. Then the guest can play with the dolphin, learn how it sings and dance in water. Kids ages 6 to 12, $89; adults, $119.
• Royal Swim: Two dolphins propel a guest onto surface of water. Guests then grab dorsal fins and swing around. Kids 6 to 12, $89; adults, $149.
Dolphin Discovery has several locations in Mexico as well as in Anguilla, Grand Cayman and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
