Design Hotels, which handles reservations for a number of independent hotels around the world, has launched a new venture called the Papaya Playa Project.
The project, described as “a communal playground and temporary pop-up camp with 99 rustic cabanas,” is located on a mile-long stretch of beach in Tulum on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
The Papaya Playa Project, which runs through May 5, is a conversion of an existing resort. Facilities include the So Happy Neo Spa; the Beach Shack bar and lounge; a raw food restaurant; a recording studio; a mini-boutique; and an amphitheater that features music, readings and lectures.
“Our idea was to create a transitory yet deeply culturally rooted experience,” said Claus Sendlinger, Design Hotels CEO and founder. “Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we put together an international team of visionaries with their own food, music, design and wellness concepts.”
The cabanas include “small indulgences, such as high-thread-count sheets, flowing mosquito nets, thick towels and a private porch with hammocks,” according to Sendlinger. Most of the cabanas include private bathrooms.
Nightly rates range from $25 in the most modest accommodations to $675 for a five-bedroom private house.
