An agreement signed last week at Tianguis Turistico in Puebla aims to increase the marketing and promotion of Acapulco, Taxco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, known collectively as the Sun Triangle.
Angel Aguirre Rivero, governor of Guerrero state, launched the overall tourism initiative in late 2012. Various components of the program will roll out during the current year.
His goal is to position and promote Acapulco, Taxco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo as prime international destinations for travelers from major U.S. gateways.
The agreement signed with Aeromexico last week by Aguirre Rivero and the Ministry of Tourism will mean joint promotions and marketing of the carrier’s routes from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and New York.
A similar agreement with United Airlines calls for joint promotions from Boston, New York, Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago and Atlanta via United’s Houston gateway.
Other components of the initiative will include the launch of a new website in English and Spanish and social media promotions.
“The Sun Triangle initiative strives to highlight the top assets in the three destinations,” said Javier Aluni, secretary of tourism for Guerrero. “From the beaches of Acapulco to the culture of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and the colonial charm of Taxco, our goal is to remind travelers of the vacation experiences that await them.”
