Though there are more than 32,000 hotel rooms in Cancun and 38,000 on the Riviera Maya, these two destinations still have some tricks up their sleeve for the coming year as new hotels ready to open and old favorites spruce up their looks.

Cancun has 173 hotels, but in the next five years the destination is planning to add 30 resorts, which will add 10,000 rooms.

The Excellence Riviera Cancun has completed its renovation. One hundred percent of the rooms have been renovated with new beds and decor, and 40 Rooftop Terrace Suites have been added. New dining options include a Spanish tapas restaurant, a sports bar and a coffee house. The five existing venues (the Lobster House, Grill, Spice, Barcelona and Toscana) have all been updated and redecorated. There are now 10 a la carte options for dinner, along with 11 bars. The hotel’s Excellence Club Lounge has also been renovated with a new premium liquor bar, buffet and lounge area that includes a concierge.

Earlier this year, Hyatt opened the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort and is opened the Hyatt Ziva Cancun, a 379-room hotel, this month.

Farther south along Mexico’s Riviera Maya, AMResorts opened the Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya, a 434-suite, adults-only property.

Swanky-and-chic Thompson Hotels has added a new player to the Playa del Carmen scene with the debut of its 92-room Thompson Playa del Carmen, the brand’s first Caribbean hotel. The Thompson is located on Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen and has a 30,000-square-foot rooftop complex that includes an infinity pool.

Ocean by H10 Hotels will open its third all-inclusive property along the Riviera Maya to be called the Ocean Riviera Paradise. Slated for completion in December 2016, the 970-room resort will have four distinct guest subdivisions. The Daisy section will cater to families and will have adjoining guestrooms, proximity to the children’s pool and Daisy daycare facilities. The Privilege area will have upgraded guestrooms with access to amenities like butler service, a private lounge and swimming area, concierge services and preferential dining reservations. Most of the hotel guests will stay in Eden, and Beso will be the adults-only section.

The exclusive Mayakoba family will welcome its latest addition at the end of 2016, as well, with the opening of the Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya. The hotel will have 213 guestrooms, three restaurants and bars and access to El Camaleon golf course within the resort complex. Other facilities include outdoor pools and a whirlpool, a spa with eight treatment rooms, a salon, gym and yoga studio.

Hyatt will also open the 220-room Park Hyatt Riviera Maya in 2016. The mixed-use hotel will have a residential component as well as a golf community on the beach. It will have meetings space, three restaurants, a coffee shop, a pool, a spa and a fitness center.
