Tom Stieghorst, a veteran Miami-based journalist who covered the travel industry as a business reporter for 23 years, joined the staff of Travel Weekly on Aug. 13 as cruise editor.
With his arrival, Kate Rice, who had been serving as Travel Weekly’s acting cruise editor since June, moved to the position for which she was originally hired, retail and technology editor. Rice will also cover leisure-travel news in the airline industry.
Stieghorst, who will continue to be based in Miami, covered cruise lines, airlines and other parts of the travel industry from 1985 to 2008 for the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. Prior to that, he had worked for three years in New York as an editor for Dow Jones News Service.
In 2008, he was named the Sun Sentinel’s assistant business editor, supervising a staff of five reporters, producing the newspaper’s business website pages and coordinating business video segments for an affiliated TV station.
A Milwaukee native, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia. Stieghorst, his wife and two daughters make their home in Coral Gables, Fla.
“We are delighted that Tom has joined the Travel Weekly family,” said Editor in Chief Arnie Weissmann. “His in-depth knowledge of the industry will serve our readers well, and his well-rounded experience with print, Web and video ensures that he will make key contributions across our various platforms.”
