The opening of the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride at the Universal Orlando Resort on Monday capped a string of investments in new rides and the upgrading of existing attractions at the Florida theme park and resort.
The Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction is based on the Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment film “Despicable Me.” It was created by Universal Orlando in partnership with Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, and fellow filmmakers.
Guests will encounter characters from the film, all voiced by the original cast: super-villain Gru (Steve Carell), his daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Fisher).
The ride combines animation and 3-D technology. Guests enter through the facade of Gru’s house, pick up 3-D “minion goggles” in his living room and be scanned for “human germs” in the Minionization Prep Room.
Gru then recruits guests for a big project, transforms them into minions and sends them off for minion training.
From there, guests take a ride during which they evade water sprayers and giant flyswatters, and experience anti-gravity rooms. There is also a disco-inspired dance party along the way.
The opening of Despicable Me Minion Mayhem follows the debut of an enhanced Blue Man Group Show at Universal CityWalk, the relaunch of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and the spring openings of Universal’s Superstar Parade and Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular — 100 Years of Movie Memories at Universal Studios Florida.
