More lift, more services make McCarran hum

Travelers arriving at McCarran Airport can now reserve tee times and sign up for VIP access to area nightclubs at a kiosk located between the airports two baggage-claim areas.

The kiosk, which is operated as a partnership between Las Vegas Preferred Tee Times and Vegas-Passport, also will act as a will-call location for those who have purchased Vegas-Passport services through third-party travel and tour companies.

LAS VEGAS -- Its no wonder that McCarran Airport is reporting record traffic. Practically every month brings more announcements about increased airlift to the city.

The following is an update on whats happening with flights into and out of Las Vegas:

" Starting March 1, America West Airlines will begin jet service between its Las Vegas hub and Boise, Idaho, as well as Albuquerque, N.M.  The carrier also initiated another flight between Las Vegas and Ontario, Calif., and, in February, began additional service between Las Vegas and Burbank as well as Oakland, Calif.

America West Express, operated by Mesa Airlines, will provide the service using an 86-passenger Canadair Regional Jet 900 (CRJ900).

America West also increased its service between Las Vegas and the Mexican cities of Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos from four times a week to daily.  In addition, the carrier will inaugurate nonstop service between Las Vegas and Pittsburgh and Anchorage on April 3 and May 1, respectively.

The carrier will use the 150-seat Airbus 320 on the Pittsburgh route and the 124-seat airbus 319 for the Anchorage service.

America West also announced new service from Las Vegas to Oklahoma City as well as the California cities of Bakersfield and Long Beach.  Flights to Oklahoma City will start May 6, while service to Bakersfield and Long Beach is set to begin April 3 and April 29, respectively.  America West Express will provide the new service.

Also beginning April 29, the carrier will add a roundtrip flight between Las Vegas and San Diego and Tucson, Ariz.

" Alaska Airlines will extend its schedule of thrice-weekly flights between Anchorage and Las Vegas through the summer.  Flights offered on the winter schedule -- on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays -- also will be offered during summer months.  For more information, log on to www.alaskaair.com.

" Californias Palmdale Regional Airport, located in the Antelope Valley on a 60-acre site on U.S. Air Force Plant 42, reopened for scheduled commercial air service with the commencement of Scenic Airlines nonstop service between Palmdale and North Las Vegas Airport.

For the past six years, the Palmdale airport served as a commercial airport for occasional charter operations.

Scenic, which operates as both a sightseeing tour operator and a regional air carrier, initially will offer 10 weekly roundtrip flights using a 19-passenger De Havilland Twin Otter Vistaliner aircraft. Regular fares start at $79 one way.

Scenics North Las Vegas terminal is a 25-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip. The carrier offers complimentary door-to-door shuttle service between its terminal, hotels on the Strip and McCarran.  To book, call (800) 634-6801 or visit www.scenic.com.

" Hooters Air in February began twice-weekly service between the Greater Rockford Airport in Rockford, Ill., and Las Vegas.  The new service will be operated by the Myrtle Beach, S.C.-based carrier using Boeing 737 and Boeing 757 aircraft and will feature Hooters Girls on every flight. " Mexicana Airlines launched thrice-weekly, nonstop service between Las Vegas and Los Cabos, Mexico. Flights depart Las Vegas on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and return Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  For more information or reservations, call (800) 531-7921 or visit www.mexicana.com.
