Travel Weekly Readers Choice 2015

Stack, Tanzman receive Lifetime Achievement awards

Brian Stack, managing director of CIE Tours International, and Susan Tanzman, the president and owner of Martin's Travel and Tours, were the recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 2015 Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards gala.

This award pays tribute to individuals whose efforts have led to extraordinary results within an organization and who have also made significant contributions to the industry as a whole.

"The legacy of the recipients of the Travel Weekly Lifetime Achievement Awards collectively defines the environment that the travel industry operates in today," said Editor in Chief Arnie Weissmann. "Their careers provide a model of vision and accomplishment to inspire both today's and tomorrow's leaders."

Brian Stack, CIE Tours International

Stack was born in Dublin and attended the O'Connell Schools there, then studied marketing at Salford College in Manchester, England.

During a 10-year career with Aer Lingus, he served in a variety of positions, including sales manager for the North of England and South of England. Following his stint at Aer Lingus, he joined the Irish Tourist Board, specializing in meetings and incentives travel. In 1977, he transferred from Dublin to New York, serving as the board's East Coast manager.

In 1983, Stack joined the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla., as vice president of sales and marketing.

He joined Ireland specialist CIE Tours in 1990 as president and was promoted to managing director in 2007.

In addition to his role at CIE, he is president of the Ireland-U.S. Council for Commerce and Industry and vice chairman of the Irish American Cultural Institute; he is also a chairman emeritus of the USTOA and a past president of the Society of Incentive Travel Executives. Stack has been inducted into the Irish America Magazine Hall of Fame, and in 2012, the Irish-American newspaper Irish Echo included him among its Irish Hospitality 50 honorees.

"I have been attending the TW awards event for many years and have seen many leaders in our industry receive the Lifetime Achievement Award," Stack said. "To be included in this group of people is a great honor."

Stack lives in Rye, N.Y., with his wife, Anne-Marie, and has two children and five grandchildren.

Susan Tanzman, Martin's Travel and Tours

Tanzman has been the owner of Martin's Travel and Tours in Los Angeles since 1973.

As a child, she enjoyed her family's trips to Hawaii (and Oahu in particular), and the Aloha State would become a key component of Martin's vacation offerings.

But Tanzman did not initially set her sights on a career in travel. Graduating from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 1974, she put her degree to use in the Los Angeles County court system as a public defender for seven years before finally transitioning completely to a career in travel.

She became a member of ASTA in 1975 and joined the California Coalition of Travel Organizations in 1990, eventually serving as president for five years and vice president for three years.

Tanzman served as chairwoman of the 2002 ASTA Congress in Honolulu and was named ASTA's Travel Agent of the Year in 2005.

She received the Elaine Kirschner Travel Agent of the Year Award from ASTA's Southern California chapter in 1995 and has served as a board member of her agency's consortium, the Ensemble Travel Group.

In 2013 she received a TravelAge West Wave Award for excellence in leadership.

In the past decade she became more actively involved in Oahu's travel industry and served as a member of the executive committee for the Oahu Visitors Bureau from 2005 to 2012. She was named the Conde Nast World Travel Specialist in Hawaii for seven years.

Of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Tanzman said: "It is truly an honor to be recognized by your peers for the 45 years I have devoted to fighting on behalf of the agency community and the consumer.".
