Two weeks after Air China quietly removed the planned June 16 launch of service from San Jose, Calif., to Shanghai from its schedule, the carrier has announced plans to commence the service on Sept. 1 instead.

The new flight will be operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and will be the first by any airline between the U.S. high-tech capital and Shanghai.

"The new service is a response to a strong demand in Silicon Valley for a direct flight to Shanghai," Air China vice president North America Zhihang Chi said in a statement Thursday.

San Jose will be Air China's 10th destination in North America.

An Air China spokeswoman said last week that the airline delayed the start of the San Jose-Shanghai service because they were still in discussions with Chinese aviation authorities.
