KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is drawing a distinction between itself and the array of
budget European carriers with a virtual reality app dubbed the Flight Upgrader.
With the aid of a virtual reality headset, users of the app
can sample the same movies, television episodes and digital newspapers and
magazines that are available to KLM passengers.
The app also provides users with the virtual experience of
being served by KLM flight attendants and experiencing "all the legroom
they need to virtually stretch out."
KLM picked the name Flight Upgrader because it suggests that
people use the app while traveling on a discount carrier "so they will
never have to experience the harsh reality of a budget flight."
Flight Upgrader can be downloaded from Google Play or
Apple's App Store. Users should supply their own virtual reality headsets,
though KLM is giving out a limited number of cardboard headsets. Requests for
those headsets can be made from KLM's Flight Upgrader website. Users can also
use the website to launch Flight Upgrader.
