American Airlines vice chairman and chief strategy officer Steve Johnson will retire at the end of the year, the carrier announced in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Johnson took over leadership of American's commercial organization after former chief commercial officer Vasu Raja left the carrier in June 2024.

Under Johnson's leadership, American reached a new agreement with Citi, rebuilt the carrier's sales and distribution strategy after it reversed its controversial focus on New Distribution Capability, and strengthened its network and partnerships, according to the airline.

Johnson joined America West Airlines in 1995 and held various positions, including executive vice president of corporate, according to American. After a stint in private equity from 2003 to 2009, he joined US Airways and led corporate affairs, until being named to his current role in May 2023.

"To say Steve has played an important role at our airline is an understatement," American CEO Robert Isom said in the filing. "Steve has been a trusted counselor, and he will be missed by many throughout the airline, including me."
