Riu Hotels & Resorts has established a private national refuge on 5,000 acres of land it owns in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

The land is adjacent to two of its hotels: the Riu Palace Costa Rica and the Riu Guanacaste.

"The objective of this refuge is to protect, preserve and manage the ecosystems it encompasses for a period of 10 years, which may be extended," said Catalina Alemany, Riu's head of corporate social responsibility.
