Lowestfare shuts Jet Set Tours, stops selling air

SUMMERLIN, Nev. -- Lowestfare.com stopped selling airline tickets and closed Jet Set Tours, its air consolidator arm as of May 2.

"After American Airlines eliminated the ticketing deal in place with TWA [when AA purchased TWA last fall], it dealt a mortal blow to Lowestfare," said a company spokeswoman. Air business had been based on the availability of reduced-price tickets from TWA.

"There's no future in continuing air ticketing. We'd rather put our money where we have a future -- in our upscale travel programs, including Maupintour and Gutsy Women Travel," she continued.

Commissions on sales via Jet Set Tours that were recorded after April 14 will be paid within the next few weeks after accounts are reconciled, the company said.

Lowestfare.com said it will continue selling cruises and vacation packages, but did not indicate if the company is considering a name change since air fares aren't part of its offering anymore.
