How AI improves weather forecasting for airlines and skiers

In April, Breeze Airways began using Weather.com's Maverick Dispatch platform to help dispatchers make flight-plan adjustments on the fly. 

The Maverick Dispatch forecasts, aided by AI-generated insights, are updated every five minutes and are specific to an area of four kilometers (2.5 miles) in horizontal distance and 1,000 feet in elevation, a tighter forecast area than Weather.com's older Fusion dispatch program. The technology is helping Breeze streamline departures and arrivals, said senior manager of flight dispatch Garrett Urry.

For example, the airline can see earlier when an approach path is likely to be impacted by thunderstorms, enabling dispatchers to request a reroute ahead of other airlines and before alternative approach paths are filled up. "It absolutely has enhanced the situational awareness of our dispatchers," Urry said. 

Breeze is just one travel company benefiting from improvements in micro-focused weather forecasting, which can be beneficial to all sorts of activities commonly associated with travel. Prime examples include hiking, biking, golf and boating. But perhaps the best example is skiing; a snowstorm can pelt one resort but barely touch one nearby. 

OpenSnow, an innovator in ski micro-forecasting, is putting AI to use in its latest forecasting model, called Peaks. Forecasts are elevation-specific, and they can be narrowed down to a horizontal distance of two miles. 

Traditionally, OpenSnow has generated forecasts by looking at a range of weather models and using their own mountain-focused meteorological expertise based on historical patterns. The Peaks model harnesses the power of machine learning to drill deeper.  

OpenSnow CEO Joel Gratz said Peaks has analyzed decades of storm data to find the patterns -- such as particular mixes of temperature, wind and precipitation -- that have made storms produce different conditions than normal weather models had expected. The system incorporates that knowledge into its forecasts.

OpenSnow's micro-forecasts can help skiers decide, for example, if conditions on a particular day look more favorable at Vail Mountain or 10 miles down the road at Beaver Creek.

One of the biggest challenges for OpenSnow, Gratz said, is how much to reveal.

"We are trying to toe that line to not necessarily give away powder stashes but help people make an informed decision with some guidance," he said. This coming season, for example, OpenSnow will have to decide how to present new forecasting capabilities, including details such as sun angles. 

In addition, OpenSnow applies its mountain forecasting expertise to help hikers choose routes in the summer, when lightning storms are frequent.

Weather.com also delves into a range of detailed recreation-specific forecasts. On its Labs.weather.com website, for example, users can view hole-by-hole wind conditions and strategy recommendations for the Augusta National and Pebble Beach golf courses, with more courses to come.

John Williams, senior director of aviation weather science for The Weather Company, explained that the past three years has brought a revolution in machine learning to simulate the weather. Forecasting companies have created what are called "neural network models," which can analyze current and historical weather conditions and excel at identifying relationships within data sets. 

"We'll take the current state of the atmosphere and predict the next state of the atmosphere and the next state of the atmosphere. And a lot of us have been sort of amazed by how well that works," he said. 

Weather.com is working toward narrowing down forecasts to a one-kilometer range, Williams said. For aviation, a key goal is to pinpoint forecasts for thunderstorms, since they are a big disrupter.

Weather.com isn't the only entity doing such aviation-related work. The EU and Eurocontrol, an intergovernmental organization that helps coordinate air traffic management, have been working since 2023 on unlocking the potential of AI-based weather forecasts for operational benefits though their Single European Sky ATM Research initiative called Sesar 3. 

The weather forecasting portion of Sesar 3, called the Kairos project, is ongoing, but attendees of the Airspace World 2026 conference in Portugal in May got an interactive demonstration on how AI-generated forecasts can improve air traffic flow through better understanding of storm systems.
