Travel Weeklys Home-based Agent E-letter: June 19 2006

THANKS TO the proliferation of new chapters across the country, it’s shaping up to be a busy summer for the National Association of Commissioned Travel Agents. The association said it has scheduled a record number of chapter events through August. Over the last three months, the group’s area chapters have more than doubled. Nacta said its membership is on the rise, and it is encouraging home-based agents to join up. “Members benefit by our focus on education and professionalism as the leading trade association representing this growing group of entrepreneurs, said Joanie Ogg, NACTA president. Details on the group and its upcoming events, and registration information, can be found at www.nacta.com.

JOYSTAR, the host agency based in Aliso Viejo, Calif., recorded a net loss of $321,497 in the first quarter, compared with a net loss of $655,666 in last year’s first quarter. Joystar said it was able to reduce its net loss despite costs associated with the integration and expansion of its new division in Miami. The company’s first-quarter revenue was $2.1 million on $18 million in gross bookings. William Alverson, chairman and CEO, said Joystar added 396 retailers in the first quarter, bringing its total to more than 3,000.
