For clients with deep pockets, Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, a private-island property at the east end of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, is offering flights through Fly The Whale, a charter company that specializes in land and sea transfers throughout the Caribbean.
The flights to Scrub Island operate between San Juan and Beef Island Tortola airports on a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft seating up to nine passengers.
The charter airline handles security, customs, immigration procedures and transfers for their passengers.
One-way fares start at $1,936.44 per person for the 45-minute flight. Once on Tortola, Scrub Island is a 10-minute ferry ride via the resort's private launch.
Other, less-expensive options include a commercial flight from San Juan via Cape Air, InterCaribbean or Seaborne Airlines. Roundtrip fares start at $450.
Passengers who arrive in St. Thomas can use Dolphin Water Taxi to Tortola for $169, one way, for the one-hour ferry ride, which includes the transfer from the Cyril King Airport to the Red Hook ferry dock in St. Thomas. The ferry fare does not include the $60 fee for BVI entry or its $40 departure tax.
Room rates at Scrub Island start at $449 per room, per night, in October and increase during the winter season.
