STR data for the Caribbean/Mexico region revealed that 151 projects totaling 30,089 rooms were in construction as of October, representing a 16.8% year-over-year jump in the number of rooms in the final phase of pipeline development.
Luxury projects accounted for 7,270 rooms, which represented the largest increase (10.6%) in year-over-year activity.
Upscale projects accounted for 7,221 rooms, an increase of 1.5%, followed by Upper Midscale, which accounted for 6,341 rooms, up 0.8%.
Four countries in the region had more than 1,000 rooms under construction. Mexico led with 16,303 rooms, which represented 3.9% of the country's existing supply, followed by the Dominican Republic with 5,738 rooms, Jamaica with 1,925 rooms and Cuba with 1,128 rooms.
