The Puerto Rico Tourism Co. expanded its Ruta de la Salsa -- Salsa Route -- tours with the launch of a third program in Ponce.

The tours highlight places and people that shaped the modern-day music genre in Puerto Rico. The Ruta de la Salsa concept, which launched a year ago at the Nuyorican Cafe in Old San Juan, was designed by local tour guide Clemente de Freitas for salsa lovers visiting Puerto Rico in search of information on the music's origins.

The three tours are offered year round in Old San Juan, in the district of Santurce in San Juan and now in Ponce. Visitors can follow the designated salsa route themselves or hire a  tour guide.

The guided tours are priced from $40 for the Old San tour, from $50 to $55 for the Santurce tour and from $60 for the Ponce tour, including transportation from San Juan.

For the self-guided tours, visitors can obtain a map of the route from Puerto Rico Tourism Co. information centers in Old San Juan.
