Carnival Corp.: Wind Song damage 'significant'

SEATTLE -- The Wind Song "appears to be a total loss" after the Windstar Cruises vessel caught fire while on a cruise in Tahiti, parent company Carnival Corp. said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The ship, which caught fire about 10 miles off the coast of Tahaa, French Polynesia, suffered "significant" damage, Carnival said. As reported, all 127 passengers and 92 crew were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The company added the vessel is fully insured, and Carnival believes there will be no material impact on the company's fiscal 2003 earnings.

The Wind Star, an identical sister ship to the Wind Song, will replace the ship in Tahiti beginning Jan. 24.
