Carnival Corp. cruise lines will skip calls at Puerto Vallarta through March 12 -- fallout from cartel violence in and around the Mexico port city on Feb. 22.

Pacific Mexico itineraries have been altered for the Carnival Panorama, Holland America Line's Zuiderdam and Princess Cruises' Royal Princess, Island Princess and Ruby Princess.

Cruise ships already had begun skipping Puerto Vallarta this week, following the Feb. 22 killing of drug lord Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho. After his killing, there were reports of fires set throughout the city, including cars set ablaze.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico had issued a shelter-in-place directive for U.S. citizens, which was lifted on Feb. 24.
