Carnival Cruise Lines on Friday  took delivery of its largest ship, the 130,000-ton Carnival Dream, in a ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

After the ceremony, the Dream left for Rome for its inaugural cruise, a 12-day trip departing Sept. 21.

The 3,646-passenger Dream will be named in New York on Nov. 12, and in December will begin year-round Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral.

The Dream, the 23rd ship in Carnival’s fleet and a new class of vessel, will feature the Carnival WaterWorks aqua park with the longest water slide at sea.

A sister ship, the 130,000-ton Carnival Magic, is scheduled for delivery in June 2011 and will also be built at the Fincantieri yard.
