Celebrity's Infinity to miss Alaska voyage for propulsion fix

Celebrity Cruises said it will cancel the Sept. 13 Alaska voyage on the Infinity due to problems with one of the ship's propulsion pods, prompting the line to send the Infinity to drydock for repairs at a facility in Victoria, British Columbia.

The Infinity has been taken out of service for at least one cruise each year since its 2000 debut to deal with various propulsion issues.

The Infinity is expected to return to service in time for its Sept. 24 Panama Canal transit from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale; the sailing will depart San Francisco a day later than scheduled and will miss its Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, port call.

Passengers booked on this cruise are entitled to a $500-per-stateroom onboard credit and a $200 future cruise certificate. In addition, they will receive overnight accommodations in San Francisco on Sept. 23.

Meanwhile, passengers booked on the Sept. 13 cruise will receive a full refund and a certificate good toward a future cruise. Travel agent commission is protected, and retailers will receive a $50-per-cabin rebooking bonus.

Celebrity established a phone desk, at (800) 852-8175, to assist guests and agents. The line said the canceled cruise is expected to have a negative impact on RCCL earnings by about five cents per share.
