Cruise West to relocate Spirit of Nantucket to Alaska

Cruise West will rename its 102-passenger ship, the Spirit of Nantucket, in conjunction with the ship's move from the East Coast to Alaska in 2008. Its new name will be the Spirit of Glacier Bay.

The small-ship line said that a rechristening would be done in Seattle in spring 2008, before the ship heads to Alaska to begin operating in the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

The ship will continue sailing East Coast itineraries through 2007.

Dick West, chairman and managing director of Cruise West, said this is the second ship of that name to be part of the line's fleet. In 1990 Cruise West introduced a 52-guest ship called Spirit of Glacier Bay that sailed a similar itinerary and was retired in 2001.

"It just makes sense to reintroduce this name and get back to our roots," said West.
