ARLINGTON, Va. -- It is "no longer necessary" for cruise lines to screen and monitor passengers for SARS, the International Council of Cruise Lines said.

"The SARS virus appears to be presently contained," ICCL said in a statement. "We will however remain vigilant to any threats and take appropriate actions to ensure that cruising remains the safest vacation available to the traveling public."

The organization's member lines adopted SARS screening guidelines in April to prevent an onboard outbreak of the illness.

Those guidelines included requiring embarking passengers to fill out a questionnaire related to their recent travel history; and barring passengers who had passed through SARS hot-spots like Hong Kong and mainland China.
