Lindblad Expeditions has christened its second polar vessel, the National Geographic Resolution, also its second vessel to launch this year.
Capt. Heidi Norling christened the Resolution at the launch of its inaugural voyage, to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands. The christening was held in the Weddell Sea's Duse Bay and was followed by a traditional Champagne toast.
The 126-guest ship was named after the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle, under the leadership of Capt. James Cook in 1773.
Lindblad's other polar vessel, the National Geographic Endurance, was christened earlier this year.
"Seeing both of our new ships together in Ushuaia was very touching," said Sven Lindblad, founder and co-chair of Lindblad's board. "They are extraordinary ships. We had very high expectations when we were building them -- and their performance has far exceeded them."
The Resolution will spend its inaugural season in Antarctica before heading to Europe this spring. The ship will sail in the Arctic this summer, then return to Antarctica.
