MSC Cruises has launched an "open booking" program allowing guests to book a future cruise during their current sailing without deciding exactly when and where they will sail again.

The program requires guests to pay a reduced deposit of $100 per person. Guests are given 12 months to choose the specifics of their next sailing.

Every onboard booking will generate an email confirmation to the guests' original travel advisor. The advisor who made the original reservation will receive full commission once the ship and sale date are selected.

Guests will receive up to $200 of onboard credit per cabin if they choose their ship and departure date within 60 days of making the open booking. Those who take longer to decide will receive $100 in onboard credit.

The move comes as MSC seeks to grow in the U.S. by adding new ships and homeports, including Galveston, Texas
