NEW YORK -- Seventy-eight passengers were injured Saturday when the
autopilot aboard 78,000-ton Norwegian Sky disengaged, causing the
ship to turn suddenly and suffer "a large roll," according to the
U.S. Coast Guard and Norwegian Cruise Line officials.
The vessel, with 2,795 passengers aboard, was sailing near the
Strait of Juan de Fuca, off British Columbia when the incident
occurred.
Sixteen passengers were treated, some for broken bones, Saturday
after the ship docked in Victoria, B.C. The Coast Guard later
cleared the vessel to continue to its next scheduled stop,
Seattle.
Norwegian Sky will be steered manually while NCL investigates
the cause of the autopilot malfunction, according to an NCL
statement.
The Coast Guard also is investigating the incident, according to
an official.
