NCL fined for environmental violations

MIAMI -- Norwegian Cruise Line agreed to pay a $1 million fine to the U.S. government for the failure to maintain an accurate oil record book on their liner the Norway prior to May 2000.

The line's guilty plea cited the "knowing failure" to log and report the incorrect operation of its onboard oil/water separators on the Norway and the illegal discharge of oily bilge water between 1997 and May 2000.

In addition to the fine, NCL will be placed on probation and, as a condition of the probation, pay $500,000 to two Florida-based environmental organizations.

NCL said it terminated or accepted resignations of seven employees and changed its environmental compliance program companywide.
