Princess plugs switch to dockside power in Juneau

JUNEAU, Alaska -- Princess Cruises hosted a "switching on shore power" ceremony here aboard 1,950-passenger Dawn Princess, one of four Princess ships that will tap local electricity while docked in Juneau this year under a $4.5 million project.

Princess plans to add a fifth ship to its shore-power vessels next year.

Using local electricity will reduce smoke emmissions from the ships while in port, a company spokesman said.

Princess announced the program last year, during which the state Department of Environmental Conservation issued 30 notices of violations to cruise ships due to excessive smoke (or "opacity") levels.
