Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. said a total of 27 guests were on an excursion bus that crashed on a rural road in the Costa Maya area of Mexico, leaving 12 dead.

The passengers were from the Royal Caribbean ship Serenade of the Seas, which left Port Everglades on Dec. 15, and from the Celebrity Equinox, which left Port Miami on Dec. 16.

The excursion was a tour sold by Royal Caribbean.

"Our hearts go out to all those involved. We are doing all we can to care for our guests, including assisting with medical care and transportation," an RCCL statement said.

Authorities have not said what might have caused the single-vehicle crash that happened around 9 a.m. in good weather.

Reports said 31 passengers, a driver and a guide were on the bus at the time of the accident.
