Transport Canada said that it has proposed a $6,000 fine for the Pearl Mist cruise ship, operated by Pearl Seas Cruises, for exceeding the speed limit in the slow speed zone of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The amount is the same that Transport Canada proposed previously for the Seven Seas Navigator, operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Both lines have 30 days from the date of the proposed fine to appeal or pay the penalty.

The fines stem from an Aug. 11 decision by Transport Canada to impose a 10 mile an hour limit on ships above a certain size passing through a broad zone in the gulf where Atlantic right whales have migrated. A number of whales were killed earlier in the summer, some by ship strikes.
