ANCHORAGE -- Mahogany Manor was once one of Anchorage's most
striking private homes -- so striking, in fact, that it became
known as the city's "original mansion." Now it is an intimate
bed-and-breakfast, offering guests some of the elegance and comfort
enjoyed by its pre-1950s inhabitants.
The structure gets its name from its mahogany siding. The home
is centrally situated but when it was built in 1947, it was on the
outskirts of town. Anchorage's growth has slowly brought it into
the heart of the action.
Its rooms are all different in size and shape. They are known as
the Northern Lights room, the Cabin, the Royal Suite and the
Governor's Suite, and are available year-round.
The Sourdough Suite -- a large two-bedroom apartment with a
private balcony overlooking a forest -- is for rent only from
October through April.
Winter prices start at $99. Next summer's rates have not been
set but are not expected to vary much from those of 1999, which
started at $155. All room rates are commissionable at 12%.
