Orient-Express enters market with Maroma

RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico -- Orient-Express Hotels acquired a 75% interest in the Maroma Resort and Spa here.

Orient-Express said it paid approximately $7.5 million for its interest in the 57-room resort, its first property in Mexico.

The firm said it assumed management of the resort and will invest about $2 million this year in infrastructure improvements and to complete the property's room expansion.

Jose Luis Moreno, the resort's architect, will own the 25% minority interest and will supervise the expansion.

Orient-Express chairman James Sherwood said the company had been seeking a resort in Mexico that met the company's standards for many years.

He described Maroma as "having exceptional amenities besides a beach, [including] substantial expansion potential at low cost and convenient access."
