Iao Valley State Monument will be closed for repairs beginning Aug. 1, according to the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources' website. The closure is expected to last until Jan. 15.

The popular Maui visitor destination is known for its short trail to a scenic view of Kukaemoku (aka the Iao Needle). Standing 1,200 feet high, it's a unique geological feature caused by erosion. The valley is also famous for the Battle of Kepaniwai, where Kamehameha's army defeated Maui's army in 1790.

Following a flood in 2016, the state has been working on slope stabilization and park improvements. This will be the final phase of that work.
