A plastic bag ban will go into effect in Anchorage on Sept. 15.

The measure, designed to reduce litter and curb the amount of plastic sent to landfills, includes exceptions for select food items, flowers, ice and other purchases. Small bags for postcards are also exempt from the ordinance.

Commercial retailers and restaurants may provide paper sacks at a cost of 10 cents per bag, and businesses may also sell reusable bags for consumer use.
