Knik River Lodge has introduced seasonal aurora-viewing activities and overnight cabin rentals.
The Palmer-area property, normally open mid-May through September, now offers seven cabins for rent on Thursday through Saturday nights until April 26. Accommodations are outfitted with one king or two queen beds, a private bathroom and a gas fireplace, plus a mini refrigerator, microwave and kettles for coffee and tea. Each cabin has a north-facing front deck, well-situated for northern lights viewing.
The main lodge will also open to guests in the evenings, with beer, wine and a limited menu of snacks available for purchase.
Set at the base of the Chugach Mountains, 20 miles southeast of Palmer or 50 miles north of Anchorage, Knik River Lodge is at the end of a remote road and far from city lights. The mountains south of the lodge protect the area from coastal fog, which increases the chance of spotting the aurora borealis.
