For 2018, Emerald Waterways introduced 17 new EmeraldActive excursions on nine of the company's Europe itineraries, giving guests the option to engage in more rigorous outings such as guided bike tours and hikes

The EmeraldActive program launched last year, and according to Emerald, the growing popularity of river cruising, including among younger travelers, has prompted the company to increase its active outings on offer.

The new EmeraldActive tours include a canoeing trip in Pocinho, Portugal along a tributary of the Douro River; several biking tours including in Vienna, in the Bernkastel-Kues region of Germany, and in the Dutch city of Hoorn; and numerous new hiking trips such as a hiking tour of the vineyards and orchards around Tournon, France, and a trek to Castle Hill in Budapest. There will also be onboard yoga classes on sailings in Portugal and France.

The EmeraldActive excursions will be offered to guests at no additional charge, and guests can sign up for these excursions directly with the cruise director onboard their ship. Emerald Waterways rates the EmeraldActive tours on a scale of 1 to 3, with level 3 requiring what the company describes as an "active fitness" level.
