Viking will offer year-round river cruises with the launch of winter cruise itineraries later this year.

The 10-day Treasures of the Rhine itinerary will explore the Middle Rhine region against the backdrop of the region's winter scenery, beginning in December and sailing through January, February and early March.

The winter is the usual off-season for Europe river cruising. Viva Cruises launched January-March cruises earlier this year.

The company says the winter itinerary will give guests a chance to explore a familiar river cruise route at a different, quieter time of year, as fewer crowds populate the sites and landmarks visited during the cruise.

Treasures of the Rhine sails between Amsterdam and Basel. Fares start at $1,999 per person.

Viking is also adding 20 more departures of its Christmas market cruises due to increased demand for the eight-day Christmas on the Rhine and Danube Christmas Delights itineraries.
