Caribbean Airlines, which began service on
Jan. 1 as the slimmed down, no-frills version of the former British
West Indies Airways, will launch code-share service with British
Airways between Port of Spain, Trinidad, and London on March 25.
Under the
code-share agreement signed late last year, Caribbean Airlines
partnered with British Airways to offer daily flights from Barbados
and Trinidad to London's Gatwick Airport.
On Wednesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays, the Boeing 777 flights will originate in
Trinidad, stop in Barbados and continue to Gatwick. On the
remaining days, the flight will originate in Barbados, but
Caribbean Airlines will operate a shuttle service from Trinidad to
provide a seamless connection to the BA London flight.
Caribbean
Airlines' customers will be able to redeem frequent flyer rewards
on the London flights and the carrier hopes to extend the reward
redemption to BA's global network later this year.
In other airline
news, the new carrier posted a 93.3% on-time performance in
February, its second month of operation, surpassing the aviation
industry standard of 85% and its own January figures of
92%.
The February
figure included 13 days of 100% on-time performance, including five
consecutive days from Feb. 5 through Feb. 9 at 100%. Through March
8, Caribbean Airlines' on-time performance was 94.5%.
Extra seats
The carrier added
100 extra flights totaling 2,500 seats to its schedule through
April to accommodate the expected increase in travelers to the
Cricket World Cup 2007 competitions within the region through April
24.
Service increases
include extra flights to Antigua, Barbados, Bermuda, Grenada,
Jamaica, St. Kitts and St. Lucia. Also, extra flights have been put
on for the Tobago Jazz Festival April 27 though April
29.
