Independence Air looking for better load factor

DULLES, Va. -- Independence Air did not quite fill half its seats with paying passengers in July, reporting a 47% load factor for its first full month of operations, the airline reported Aug. 10.

An Independence spokesman said the airline is not concerned and expects its load factor to climb to 57% to 60% this month, making progress towards its goal of attaining load factors in the low 70s. He would not disclose the airlines break-even load factor.

Independence, based at Dulles Airport, started service June 16 and has not altered its growth plan, which will have it flying to 37 destinations by Oct. 1. A West Coast destination and a major location in Florida will be added in November, when Independence receives the first of its new A319 aircraft.
