Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport has begun a phased closure to make way for demolition and reconstruction ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
JetBlue has moved its LAX operations to Terminal 1, and on Oct. 22 Spirit will move out of Terminal 5 and into Terminal 2. American will transition its to Terminal 4 on Oct. 28.
The Terminal 5 reconstruction will modernize the facility but won't add more gates. It will have a new bus gate to ferry passengers between terminals as well as a post-security pathway to provide flyers with a connection to Terminal 4.
The budget isn't finalized but is expected to be just under $2 billion.
The Terminal 5 project is part of $30 billion capital improvement program at LAX. A major uncompleted portion of the project is a 2.25-mile, six stop, automated people mover to transport flyers between terminals and to parking, light rail and the new consolidated rental car facility. The mover is expected to begin running next year.
