A new TSA program called Gateside allows PreCheck members to pass through airport security on days they aren't flying, "bringing back the moments that once defined air travel."
The TSA said the program is for "welcomes and send-offs, meeting friends during a layover and enjoying dining and shopping along the way."
Implemented without much fanfare last week, the program is active in 13 airports so far: Dallas Fort Worth; Phoenix Mesa; Columbus, Ohio; Detroit; Wichita, Kansas; Indianapolis; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Little Rock, Ark.; Oklahoma City; Omaha, Neb.; San Diego; and Salt Lake City.
TSA referred to this early period of the program as an operational assessment phase.
To pass through security without a boarding pass, PreCheck members must apply online one to three days ahead of their planned visit. If approved, they'll have permission to pass through security for a full day and will be allowed to re-enter. Gate visitors are subject to the same ID requirements as flyers.
Members of the Global Entry, Nexus and Sentri programs can also take advantage of the program using their Known Traveler Number.
