PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Travelers no longer have to be at least 25 years old to rent a Budget or Avis car in most states.

The companies, owned by Cendant Corp., lowered the minimum age to 21, but renters younger than 25 will have to pay a $25 per day fee.

Its been a funny thing, a Cendant spokeswoman told TravelWeekly.com. At 21, you can vote, you can drink, you can have an apartment and job & but you cant rent a car.

Cendant said that by lowering the age limit, it hopes to attract more drivers to rent cars.

So far, competing car rental companies have not followed Budget and Avis.

In other news, Budget and Avis also raised their rental rates by $5 a day or $20 a week.
