The State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs said passport processing times have fallen to four to six weeks, down from six to eight weeks.

The bureau said it has been well under the previous target of six to eight weeks for months.

The updated processing time of four to six weeks applies to applications submitted online or by mail. The timeline begins when an application is received by the State Department and does not include mailing time.

For those in need of expedited service for U.S. passports, processing remains two to three weeks, the bureau said.

The State Department said last month that after a trial, online passport renewal was fully operational.
